What is Montessori?

Walk into a Montessori classroom and find a specially prepared environment that provides rich, developmentally appropriate experiences.  You will observe multi-aged children working alone or in small groups, engaged in stimulating, challenging, individualized hands-on activities, prepared by teachers who are Montessori trained and North Carolina certified.  Student work areas are well defined and include materials that invite the students to make discoveries about their immediate community and the broader world, in a sequential manner.  In a Primary class, comprised of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, you may notice a student working with the trinomial cube, to match the colors of the smaller pieces to reform the cube. In a Lower Elementary room, consisting of first, second and third graders, a student might measure the individual pieces.  Fourth and fifth graders, in the Upper Elementary room, would use the cube as they delve into algebra.  Students also use concrete materials in other areas as they explore increasingly more complex concepts.  Using Montessori materials and activities to follow the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, Morehead Montessori educates the whole child.
